The Ultimate Malaysia Road Trip in a Motorhome: KL to Cameron Highlands

Some roads are just better in a motorhome.

The drive from KL to Cameron Highlands is one of them. Winding mountain roads, tea plantations that stretch further than you can see, cool air that hits you the moment you gain elevation. In a car, you drive through it. In a motorhome, you live in it.

Here's how to do it properly.

The Route

KL → Tapah (via PLUS Highway, Exit Tapah) → Ringlet → Tanah Rata → Brinchang. Total distance: approximately 200km. Drive time without stops: 3 hours. With stops, a full day.

Where to Park Overnight

Cameron Highlands has limited dedicated motorhome spots — this is still developing infrastructure in Malaysia. Your best bets are designated camping areas around Tanah Rata, private farmstays that accept RV parking (call ahead), and a few campsites near Brinchang that have flat ground and basic facilities.

CampORA's ROAM module lists verified overnight spots for motorhomes — check before you go.

Stops Worth Making

  • Tapah town — fuel up here, last major town before the climb. Good rest stop, decent food.
  • Lata Iskandar Waterfall — 45 minutes into the highland drive. Small, accessible, worth 20 minutes. Kids love it.
  • Ringlet — underrated first stop in the highlands. Less touristy than Tanah Rata, good lakeside views, quiet enough to park and have breakfast properly.
  • BOH Tea Plantation — you've seen the photos. In person it's better. Go early (before 10am) to avoid the crowds and get the light right.
  • Brinchang Night Market — if you time it right, the Saturday night market is one of the best in the highlands. Corn, steamboat, strawberry everything.

What to Pack for This Route

The highlands can drop to 15°C at night. Pack layers even if you're coming from KL's 34°C. Your motorhome will feel different at elevation — tank levels, gas efficiency, water temperature. Check everything before the climb.

Why This Route Works for First-Timers

It's the right distance — long enough to feel like an adventure, short enough to not overwhelm. The road is well-maintained. There's phone signal most of the way. And the destination rewards you properly. If you're testing motorhome travel for the first time, Cameron Highlands is the confidence-builder you need.
